9 Double Picks
This is a weaving fault that causes a thick line across the piece where two picks are woven together in the same shed. When the cloth is finished the fault is very unsightly and impossible to remove or cover up. -
10 Buckling
A weaving fault, due to tight threads and uneven tension. -
11 Double Ends
Two ends drawn through the same dent in the reed and same eye in the heald and weaving as one. Double ends and double picks are common in many matting cloths. Double ends often appear in a cloth where not intended, and this is a weaving fault, and known as "taped ends." -
12 Fiving
A weaving fault frequently found in sateens. It shows as a crack across the piece between every 5 picks. When dyed the fault is more visible. The cause is faulty shedding by one stave being lifted slightly higher than the others. The faults known as " threeing " or " touring " are caused in the same way. Threeing happens when the 3-shaft twill is the weave, fouring when the 4-shaft twill, and fiving with the 5-shaft satin. -

14 Broken Ends
A weaving fault caused by threads of warp breaking while in the loom. This is a serious defect when the cloth has a pattern or when coloured ends are used. -
15 Looped Weft
A weaving fault that is due to insufficient tension on the weft as it leaves the shuttle, or rebounding of the latter as it enters the box. -
16 Paresseuse
The French term for a weaving fault caused by warp threads not lifting high enough to form a proper shed so that the weft goes over them instead of under. -
17 Slack Selvedge
A bad weaving fault which may cause much damage during finishing. It may be caused by the yarn being wound carelessly on the warp beam at the sides; by the selvedge yarn being too coarse, or not so elastic as the other yarn; by worn temples not keeping the cloth out; and in many other ways. -

19 Flat
A manufacturing term which means that two picks have been woven together as one in the same shed and is a fault in weaving. A similar fault occurs in the warp in a plain cloth, when one end is missing two ends weaving alike come together and form a flat. -
20 Float
There is also the float that is not required and which is a most objectionable fault in any cloth. It is often caused by careless weaving, although inferior yarn is very liable to produce this fault. End breakages, incorrect shedding, faulty action of the shedding mechanism, wrongly pegged dobby lags, wrongly cut jacquard cards, etc., are prolific causes of floats. ———————— Warp or weft threads which pass over the threads of the opposite series are said to be floated, and in twill, satin crepe and other weaves the length of the float is named in terms of the number of threads the floating thread passes over between two intersections. In very many cloths the sole means of figuring is the floating of the warp or weft according to a defined and prearranged plan.
